70:1A questioner questioned the imminent torment.

70:2For the disbelievers; none can repel it.

70:3From God, Lord of the Ways of Ascent.

70:4Unto Him the angels and the Spirit ascend on a Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years.

70:5So be patient, with sweet patience.

70:6They see it distant.

70:7But We see it near.

70:8On the Day when the sky will be like molten brass.

70:9And the mountains will be like tufted wool.

70:10No friend will care about his friend.

70:11They will be shown each other. The criminal wishes he would be redeemed from the punishment of that Day by his children.

70:12And his spouse, and his brother.

70:13And his family that sheltered him.

70:14And everyone on earth, in order to save him.

70:15By no means! It is a Raging Fire.

70:16It strips away the scalps.

70:17It invites him who once turned his back and fled.

70:18And accumulated and hoarded.

70:19Man was created restless.

70:20Touched by adversity, he is fretful.

70:21Touched by good, he is ungenerous.

70:22Except the prayerful.

70:23Those who are constant at their prayers.

70:24And those in whose wealth is a rightful share.

70:25For the beggar and the deprived.

70:26And those who affirm the Day of Judgment.

70:27And those who fear the punishment of their Lord.

70:28Their Lord’s punishment is not to be taken for granted.

70:29And those who guard their chastity.

70:30Except from their spouses or those living under their control, for then they are free of blame.

70:31But whoever seeks to go beyond that—these are the transgressors.

70:32And those who honor their trusts and their pledges.

70:33And those who stand by their testimonies.

70:34And those who are dedicated to their prayers.

70:35These will be honored in Gardens.

70:36What is with those who disbelieve, stretching their necks towards you.

70:37From the right, and from the left, banding together?

70:38Is every one of them aspiring to be admitted into a Garden of Bliss?

70:39No indeed! We created them from what they know.

70:40I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests, that We are Able.

70:41To replace them with better than they, and We are not to be outdone.

70:42So leave them to blunder and play, until they meet their Day which they are promised.

70:43The Day when they will emerge from the tombs in a rush, as though they were hurrying towards a target.

70:44Their eyes cast down; overwhelmed by humiliation. This is the Day which they were promised.
