The Layered Atmosphere

The Quran mentions the creation of the universe in stages and refers to the creation of seven heavens (or layers of the sky) in two days. This can be reflective of the stratification of the Earth’s atmosphere, which consists of multiple layers, each with distinct characteristics. While the term “seven heavens” is open to interpretation, it may suggest a complex, multi-layered cosmos.

فَقَضَىٰهُنَّ سَبْعَ سَمَٰوَاتٍۢ فِى يَوْمَيْنِ وَأَوْحَىٰ فِى كُلِّ سَمَآءٍ أَمْرَهَا ۚ وَزَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِمَصَٰبِيحَ وَحِفْظًۭا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْعَلِيمِ

So He completed them as seven universes in two days, and He assigned to each universe its laws. And We decorated the lower universe with lamps, and for protection. That is the design of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.
